It's been in the works for a while now, but I did it, I quit my day job of nearly 6 years and I'm leaving to do my own thing. Yesterday was my last day.
It all boils down to one very awesome thing: my posters and prints have gone over really well recently (thank you to everyone that's ever bought one!) and the numbers add up to make it a full-time thing. On top of the 40hr work week at the day job, I was easily pouring in over 30 hours each week into illustrating and printing my own stuff. Sanity aside, it's not a healthy workload, and after a sit-down with my wife we constructed an escape plan to get me on my way to self-employment. It's been a cycle of feeling scared, nervous, and anxious obviously, but more than anything I'm just really excited to make my own stuff, and own everything that I do. I'm just going to give it the ol' college try and see where it takes me.
There is a loose game plan in place, and through the rest of the year I'm going to ramp up production on new illustrations, new prints, and a few other things. I'll be at a number of shows, fairs, pop-ups, and venues through 2015 so I should have plenty to show off during each stop. I can't wait to release some of the bigger things I've been working on and get them out into the world. Announcements coming soon.
And like I mentioned above, I really want to thank everyone that's bought a print from me and has helped validate this huge decision. It feels great to have people dig my work and I really hope to push this snowball further down the hill. I'm also still planning to take on new freelance gigs and client work, so if you're interested in working with a motivated illustrator/designer/printmaker, be sure to hit me up.
Okay, time to get back to it. So here's to taking the plunge, giving it all I've got, and making cool shit.
*no, there isn't an actual shirt that says "i quit my job...", but there damn well should be!
